but why? Why? The 5.1 music is simply heaven, particularly the title track- when you hear the shipmates speaking in the rear speakers, you know you have struck audio gold. But, if you are a purist who thinks that the Beatles got it right the first time and have been taken over by body snatchers who re-worked the evil audio masterpiece, a Dolby 2.0 stereo track of the mono score is still in there.

If you are a fan of the music (and there are at least 5 of you who aren't!) these songs have been re-mastered religiously, and under the watchful eyes of the surviving Fab Four. The speaking sequences are lovely, particularly the Flying Glove, which visits all speakers on his flights of terror, circling your living room deftly and then cackling his evil laugh through the subwoofer. The audio re-master was done in Dolby Digital 5.1. Hoo-boy! Many DVD users I have spoken to claim that Yellow Submarine is the best sounding DVD they own, hands down, and I'd be hard pressed to disagree. The real gem of this DVD is the beautiful way it sounds. That said, it is tough to ignore the fact that this DVD is NON-anamorphic, and NON-enhanced for 16x9 TVs. Among that which stood out to me was upon the return to Pepperland sometimes the sky and some of the print looked a little dirty (and not just because of the effect of the Meanies), but I am REALLY nit-picking here- it certainly does not distract. The animation is unique there are never really more than 16 colors or so on the screen at a time- certainly not your Tarzan deep-canvas technology- but what is there is now cleaner than it has ever been.Īny artifacts I noticed were print artifacts, not digital ones, and even those were alarmingly subtle for a film from 1968. The picture has been cleaned up immensely from its magnetic cousin.

If you were somehow able to find the VHS cassette version of this movie during its long legal exile, you will indeed appreciate the velvet treatment this disc got to restore it. The dialogue is downright funny in a deadpan-cheeky-British way that just isn't seen anymore (Paul: "It's blue glass!" Ringo: "Must be from Kentucky then?). you may not remember seeing this film, but you'll remember the Blue Meanies. The creatures are pure magic, particularly the Blue Meanies, each representing a different aspect of "the man.? The Meanies' mouselike ears almost gives them a look of Mickey Mouse clones gone psycho it leaves a lasting impression. The designs, creatures and sets are very 60s pop art, and there are big nods to Warhol and Dali. If you have any love for Austin Powers, this is his side of the 60s: the groovy colors, the British pop art and clothes- these are the true styles that movie parodied. I don't want to make the film sound overly heavy by pushing the art side of it it can be appreciated on so many levels, by children, stoned hippies, or Andy Warhol fans. Along the way the movie is punctuated with timeless Beatles songs and peppered with thousands of throw-away jokes, groaners and one-liners typical of the era. Along the way they venture through the Sea of Time, the Sea of Science, the Sea of Monsters, the Sea of Holes, and eventually the Sea of Green where Pepperland is, for their confrontation with the evil Blue Meanies.

They agree, and so the odd odyssey begins. He lands on the doorstep of The Beatles' mystic mansion and begs them to help rid Pepperland of the Blue Meanies. One man escapes the carnage in a sea going (yet flying) vessel from which the movie gets its name.

Pepperland, a psychedelic haven of happy free-thinking people, is suddenly overrun by the evil Blue Meanies, a collection of odd generic baddies. What I did see was unlike anything I had seen before! Not only was it colorful and stimulating art piece and a great-sounding sing-along musical piece, but it was a very funny scripted film that grows on you something fierce. When I found the title at my local library (due to legal wrangling between United Artists, Apple Films, and a few other factions, sightings of this film were for a time as rare as seeing Jesse Ventura at Sunday morning mass) I popped it in, not really expecting much. The whole thing is this big drug metaphor, man, you should see it.? It sounded more than a little flaky. "It's great man, there's like this nirvana under the sea that's attacked by evil Blue Meanies, and uh, yeah, the Beatles save 'em using this yellow submarine.
